Pioneering a New Category for Home Water Systems
Most whole-home water treatment systems still look like they were designed in the 1980s. Industrial enclosures with exposed valves, hidden in a basement or garage, forgotten about until it's time to haul another 40-lb bag of salt. These systems protect everything water touches in a home, so why do they look and feel like commercial equipment?
The answer came from homeowners, installers, and dealers during generative field research. The products looked like utility gear, and the environments we kept visiting reinforced it. We started asking, "What if this were more of an appliance, rather than a utility?"
Once we started using the word "appliance," it became a category shift. The system that protects your home should feel like it belongs in it.
Pentair built a series of alpha units for a new salt-free system and tested them with homeowners. I led validation research and a design program that became Naia. Homeowners wanted set-it-and-forget-it interactions. Installers wanted speed and fewer hookups. Dealers wanted remote monitoring so they could support customers without rolling a truck.
Installer-first architecture simplified hookups and reduced on-site time. Connectivity communicates proactive solutions to the dealer before the homeowner realizes something is wrong. The team applied the Visual Brand Language I directed for Pentair's broader portfolio.

NAIA by Everpure Home was introduced at the 2026 International Builders' Show as a salt-free, IoT-enabled water treatment appliance for premium homes. The "appliance" positioning shaped both the product and how Pentair brought it to market, targeting a global point-of-entry category valued at over $10 billion. The basement utility became a kitchen-grade appliance.
